Harvesting Poplar Bark Siding in the Woods - Peeling Logs
Переглядів 274 тис.Рік тому
Poplar bark siding was something I discovered when Googling for information regarding the use of poplar logs for cabin building. As soon as I saw it I wanted to do it. I quickly made up reasons in my head of why I need to cut down a poplar tree and set out into the woods to find a tree....mostly looking for larger strain trees clear of branches as high as possible. This video shows my first exp...

FELLING TREES in the WOODLOT - OAK and POPLAR
Переглядів 10 тис.2 роки тому
I went for one but got two. In this video I saw down a tall poplar and while at it take down a large dead standing oak. One was easy to get but the other was much more involved, while it may look simple to drag it out with a tractor, it's a bit unnerving maneuvering a tractor through the woods on uneven ground. The risk of rolling the tractor is high along with other dangers.

Saw an early 1960's AMF DeWalt Power Shop radial arm saw on marketplace about 20 miles north of me today for $35 the guy claims everything works on. Thing is, I already have a table saw and a miter saw, so I don't really know what I'd do with one of those. A friend of mine had one back in the '80's that he seemed to like a lot, but that's the only one I'd ever even actually seen. are there any advantages to having one of these as opposed to having my table saw and my miter saw?

Thank you! I had to replace the window in an old barn that blew out in a storm. It might have been oil based, but it was so old that most of the paint was pealing off. So I sanded it down really well (yes, I used a mask, and maybe it was even lead based paint from 100 years ago, so I probably should have used an N95), then I used water based primer (2 coats) then latex outdoor paint (2 coats). Bought the DAP 33 for the glazing, and after reading the instructions realized I couldn't use it because it was for oil based paint. So after several other searches on what to use, I found your video and will do the DAP latex glazing and give it a try. I appreciate the video, it gives me more confidence, since I've never done this before. I already had my points in before watching this video. I had purchased points at the hardware store, but found my Dad's old points from years ago. I guess he did this himself too, but he's not around so I can't for his advice. Another video suggested I place a small bead behind the glass to seat it, so I'll do this too. Keep up the good work, I'm going to use your technique!

All of the modern nuts.out there building camping shelters, don't know this was the old mountain men's go to material. It makes an excellent roof, if you use smaller trees and turn two inside up and one inside down. With a slight slop it will last a long time

What are your thoughts ten years later? I've had mine for ten years and it's my only saw. I've been happy with it. Very convenient to roll around. The fence? It's good for most stuff, and I have done a little bit of finish work without trouble. All in all an indispensable tool I've liked owning. No issues to speak of considering what it is.

The first thing you need to do is check if the blade is indeed exactly parallel to the track. I had this issue when I trimmed my splinter guard only to find out the blade was slightly out of alignment 😢

For those of us who don't have a hill of decomposed sawdust nearby: If you have a compost bin with a built-in ventilation, you can layer your kitchen scraps and lawn clippings with sawdust. This speeds up its aging and results in amazing rich but airy soil that you won't find at stores.

Which is the difference between this copy and the original Randall? Simple: the price! The copy is worth a couple of hundred dollars while the original about five hundred dollars plus a five years waiting list. If you want one on the the spot be prepared to spend till about one thousand US dollars! But it's also a positive side of Randall knives: they are an investment asset which gains about 10% every year. The copy on the contrary will loose value every year!

Old dimensional lumber from buildings up thru the 1940’s is absolutely worth some work to salvage. There is no more old growth heart pine to be had except for salvage & sinkers. People are gutting old houses in 50 mile radius of Charlotte to renovate with OSB & vinyl plank, tossing a boat load of dimensional lumber, trim, raised panel doors, window sashes & mantles. I asked one guy why he was throwing out stained raised panel doors complete with their mortise locks, engraved brass knobs, casing, backband, & 1 1/4” thick jambs. He said it was easier to rip them out & install pre hung units than work on them
